Why should Windows install Firefox instead of IE by default

Postby propeng on July 21st, 2009, 12:45

From CNET:
The IE 7 installer asks users to temporarily disable their antivirus and antispyware protection, which doesn't inspire confidence. Installing IE 7 requires Windows validation, a restart, and a connection to Microsoft servers, which significantly slows down the process. Firefox, on the other hand, is a small download and installs in about 30 seconds, no reboots or gene sequencing required.

IE: Free, Closed Source
FF: Free, Open Source

IE: Slow, Long Download/Installation
FF: Less than 30 seconds installation, about 9 MB download.

IE: Plugins + ActiveX which is not safe and can spread viruses in the HD.
FF: Safe extensions, build by its community.

IE: Weak pop-up blocker, all pop-ups pass through it.
FF: 99% of the pop-ups are blocked and with extra extensions all ads are blocked too.

Score:
IE: 1.5/10. FF: 9/10.

I agree 100%

Every time I do updates when I install Windows (thank fully no more then a couple times a year) IE is one of the longest installations there is!

When I got my 500GB HDD, I don't think (I could be wrong) that IE8 took as long to download, but still it takes a little while.

Yes, but unfortunately, they won't. Because Microsoft is stubborn!

I think IE is the slowest browser in the world.
I hate closed source.
The download took 8 Minutes and I got a Virus (when installing it).
It installs adware.
IE needs more than 100 days to make a path (bug fixes).
Firefox needs only 3 days.

In fact, I've never seen an IE bug fix... bugs never get fixed.
And with closed source it's not possible for the community to submit patches.
